General Information

Torness on the east coast of Scotland is the most recent of six nuclear power stations we have built in the UK.

Its two Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor Units, each housed in a concrete pressure vessel, provide a total generating capacity of 1,400 megawatts.

The project involved construction of the power plant containment buildings, cooling water systems, ancillary buildings and associated infrastructure across an 81 hectare site.

Working in joint venture, we conceived and designed the first reactor containment Prestressed Concrete Pressure vessel for use in a commercial nuclear power station in the UK. This design was developed for the AGR stations at Torness as well as Hinkley Point B, Hunterston B, Heysham 2.

We were responsible for the entire civil, structural and architectural design of 13 and the complete construction of six of the UK’s nuclear power stations.

More recently we are providing the design services for the two Auxilliary Buildings for the Taishan 1 & 2 EPR nuclear power plants in China. The project follows our successful work with Coyne et Bellier on the Flamanville 3 EPR, currently under construction in France.
