JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION

The largest station on the Jubilee Line Extension, North Greenwich Station involved civil engineering on a huge scale.

General Information

As part of the Jubilee Line extension we constructed North Greenwich Station and drove 4,900m of tunnel between Canada Water and the portal at Canning Town.

Totally immersed in saturated ground on an old gasworks site, the station is 20m wide, 20m deep and 358m long.

Twin tunnels were driven east from North Greenwich Station to the Canning Town portal and west to reach Canary Wharf Station. We also drove twin tunnels between Canary Wharf and Canada Water Station.

At 370m long, up to 35m wide and 20m deep, the secant bored pile wall we designed to allow the station excavation to take place is one of the largest ever seen in the UK.

To support the piles during excavation, two levels of props were provided, the lower section carrying loads of up to 1,300 tonnes.

A launch shaft for the tunnelling machines on the Canada Water to Canary Wharf section was constructed in difficult ground conditions at Durands Wharf by sinking a caisson to tunnel level. Spoil from the tunnel construction was taken away from this worksite by river.

We worked in joint venture with Wayss & Freytag and Bachy to deliver North Greenwich Station and the tunnelling from Canning Town to Canada Water for client London Underground Limited.

The Jubilee Line Extension was named Millennium Building of the Year by the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust, with North Greenwich station receiving a special commendation.

North Greenwich Station was awarded a Certificate of Excellence at the Concrete Society Awards 2000.

It also won the Special Award for the Pursuit of Architectural & Engineering Excellence in Public Transport at the British Construction Industry Awards 2000.
