The Core is the first building to reach completion at the new Science Central development in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The seven-storey building provides 2,750m2 of flexible office accommodation along with an events space seating audiences of up to 150. Rated BREEAM ‘Excellent’, sustainability features include a 27m-high green wall.
Infrastructure works included installation of new utilities and the creation of new public spaces.
Early planning and effective collaboration were key to the successful design and delivery of the building’s complex façade.
Containing more than 35,000 plants, the building’s 27m-high vertical garden is designed to attract wildlife which will be able to benefit from the plants throughout the development. Sustainability features also include a sedum roof, rainwater harvesting, low energy LED lighting, and bee hotels.

The Core was named winner of The Legacy Award – Sustainability category at the Constructing Excellence in the North East (CENE) Awards 2015.
The judges said the project team had “looked at all opportunities to make this a sustainable build and seem to have engaged everyone early on in the process with a full energy masterplan using CEEQUAL and BREEAM to achieve high standards”.
