All the timber used in both the frame and weather envelope of the building comes from managed sustainable sources. The project also included the use of reclaimed slate cladding.

The school uses natural light and ventilation along with energy efficient technologies including weather compensated central boiler plant. Sophisticated control systems ensure artificial lighting is only used when necessary.

Hazelwood School was honoured with a major US architectural accolade at the DesignShare Awards 2008. The Honour Award was presented in recognition of the use of innovative design within a learning environment. Hazelwood is the first British school to receive the award.

The school picked up a Civic Trust Award in 2008, the judges hailing the “sensitive handling” of the scheme. They went on to say: “Many of the existing trees on the site have been preserved and the building curves around them in a central spine. The internal curves of the building reduce the visual scale of the main circulation spaces and help to remove any institutional feel.”

The school also won an Inspiring Design award from the British Council for School Environments.
