An existing building was refurbished and extended to provide new offices, laboratory areas and welfare facilities for this leading manufacturer of advanced technology products.
All operations were undertaken alongside a live factory environment, the project including the strip out of existing offices and laboratories, formation of new layouts, installation of building services, internal fit out and external works.
Challenges for the project team included refurbishing and installing mechanical and electrical systems without impacting on the adjacent production and laboratory areas which remained operational throughout.
External works included the installation of new high-performance glazing and rooflights to provide improved solar thermal control and increased natural light. With the majority of the existing structure retained, new high performance insulation was also installed, ensuring a better U-value than required for compliance.
“The quality of the building is a testament to all the careful thought, skill and effort that went into the project from concept through design and construction to commissioning and fit out. Thanks again to you and your colleagues for your contributions to resurrecting our wonderful workplace,.” WL Gore Project Champion Douglas Thomson
The project won the Refurbished/Recycled Workplace category and was named Best of the Best at the British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards.
Hailing the building’s transformation as “nothing short of miraculous”, the judges said: “The magnificent refurbishment of this global technological manufacturer’s home of more than 30 years has taken a building that was no longer fit for purpose and regenerated it into a modern, green and inspirational workplace.
“WL Gore selected the optimum solution and chose the best team members that have delivered the quality that was required on programme.”
