General Information

Located on a 100 acre site in the Docklands, ExCeL London has been extended to provide almost 100,000m2 of event space.

The expansion includes provision of a covered walkway from Prince Regent Station to the complex which hosts some of the biggest trade and consumer events in the UK.

A further 32,500m2 of event space has been provided, as well as a semi-permanent auditorium with retractable seating for 5,000, and extended conference, meeting and dining facilities.

We undertook the civil and structural design of the new phase of works which merge seamlessly with the existing venue.

A detailed structural model was developed to understand the behaviour of the roof and the spider frame above.

We designed the original centre’s 14,000m2 pre-cast concrete deck which is built out over the water of the Royal Victoria Dock to maximise the available exhibition space. A total of 350 deep-bored marine piles support the extension.

The expansion is the latest in a series of contracts we have undertaken at the site since completing the original venue in 2001. These include provision of a dedicated energy centre, enhancement of conference facilities and modifications to enable the venue to host the Boat Show.

The complex logistics of the site required close liaison with the neighbouring City Airport, the Docklands Light Railway, the National Grid and the Royal Docks Management Authority. We also ensured any additional requirements arising from the existing venue’s ongoing activities were accommodated.

The project won a Silver Award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards 2011.
