This dramatic extension has transformed the ‘street to seat’ experience for visitors to the home of Scottish Opera.
We constructed an eye-catching extension in the form of a dramatic multi-layered foyer at the 147-year-old Theatre Royal in Glasgow.
Significant structural interventions within the existing building, which included the removal of staircases and walls, were successfully completed within a three-month closure period.
We completed the extension’s geometrically complex concrete frame with in-house labour and supervision.
Our in-house Design Group and site team worked to devise the temporary works and falsework design required to achieve the unique geometry of the superstructure while maintaining a quality finish within the dimensional tolerances.
With the theatre open for all but a three month period, we carried out extensive pre-emptive work prior to starting on site to ensure we avoided impacting on its operation and worked closely with the theatre operator throughout construction.
The Theatre Royal was named winner of the Leisure/Culture Building or Project award at the Scottish Design Awards 2015 and was among the projects honoured at the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Awards 2015.
